Zumba!

Happy Saturday everyone! This morning I stepped out of my comfort zone and attended a Zumba class at my gym. The class description for Zumba reads: "Dance away your worries to Latin and International music. Have fun while toning and strengthening the body." I've been wanting to try a Zumba class for quite some time now and was excited when my gym added it to their aerobics schedule.

The class started right on time at 8:30. The instructor was very energetic and upbeat. I think that makes a big difference in an aerobics class. We went through about ten short dance routines featuring moves inspired by salsa, meringue, and even a few Bollywood dances! I especially liked the music. Most of the songs were by Daddy Yankee, Shakira, Wyclef, and Beyonce. There was one song that I really liked that went something like, "We like dem girls that shake that @ss, shake that @ss!" I'm not a big rap or pop music fan, but I have a soft spot in my heart for songs that have filthy lyrics. If you know who sings that, let me know. Overall, I liked Zumba. I think it's a great workout if you're feeling tired, but still want to hit the gym. It's VERY low impact (I didn't break a sweat) and you really have to get into the moves to feel like you're working out. I plan on going back again because I think it's a good cardio workout to do after strength training. Plus, it's fun to mix it up once in a while.

After Zumba and showing off my new dance moves to my boyfriend, I indulged in my favorite breakfast.

Chobani with 1/4 cup Kashi GoLean Crunch of course! I'm a creature of habit, what can I say? A few hours later, I made a comforting bowl of oats.

In my belly went 1/2 cup oats, 1/2 cup cottage cheese, blueberries, and a spoonful of PB Loco Cookie Dough Peanut Butter. So good!

We're off to the movies to see "Couples Retreat" (I love Jason Bateman!) and then grab some dinner afterwards. Be sure to check back later if you want to win a Newman's Own goodie bag!
Have you ever tried Zumba? Did you like it?

Used to LOVE zumba, since I was a dancer my entire life :)

I tried zumba once and it wasn't for me! I don't have a rythmic bone in my body so I looked like a fool. I wish I knew who sang that, I just googled the lyrics. No dice.

I'm scared of Zumba! I'm not the most coordinated person ;-)

How fun! I'm never tried Zumba, but good for you fo doing something new and different. I love Wyclef. I went through a rap stage in high school because I dated a guy who always listened to rap!! I know it doesn't sound like me, but it's just got such a great beat.

Enjoy the movie and dinner!

I love Zumba. I used to do it every Thursday after work with another dietitian (even cooler since she is over 50!) and some other staff from the hospital since the gym was right across the street. After a while when you have the routines down you really can burn a sweat when you get into it. You don't need to focus on the instructor as much and can really get into it. Jump higher and get a little more funky. And yes, the music is great and fun. Let me know how the movie is since I kinda want to see it.

Definitely want to read your review of Couples Retreat.

Do you need to be a good dancer to enjoy Zumba? I'm too intimidated. I'm the rhythm-less nation.

I looooooove Zumba. I have absolutely no natural sense of grace or rhythm, but neither did anyone else in my Zumba class!

I really want to try Zumba but I'm a terrible dancer. I mean, I can like dance at weddings and all, but I'm SO bad at remembering a routine. Once last year my dad and I did the P90x cardio kickboxing dvd together and I learned why I'm so bad at remembering routines haha...both of us were all over the place!
